A Van Rental Comparison Guide for First-Time Hirers

May 22, 2026

Hiring a van for the first time is one of those things that sounds dead simple until you actually try to do it. You go online expecting a quick booking and suddenly you’re staring at six different vehicle categories, optional insurance upgrades you weren’t planning for, and are not sure where to start.

We see it all the time at Sky Van Hire. People turn up having done very little research, or alternatively having done loads of research on the wrong things. So here’s what we’d actually tell someone who needs some straight forward advice.

Van Size Comparison: Don’t Make the First-Timer Mistake

Getting the size wrong is far and away the most common first-timer mistake. Too small and you’re doing two runs instead of one. Too big and you’re spending twenty minutes reversing down a narrow terraced street.

A small van is brilliant when it’s the right job. Clearing one room, picking up a sofa from Facebook Marketplace, doing a loft run. Our small vans at Sky Van Hire carry about 1.6 metres of load, which is more than it sounds when you’re loading it sensibly.

For an actual house move, most people end up in either a short wheelbase or long wheelbase Transit-style van. A Short wheel based Van handles a one-bed flat no problem and is far less intimidating to drive than people expect. Step up to a long wheelbase if you’ve got a two-bed on your hands, or if wardrobes and dining tables are involved.

The Luton with a tail lift is the best option for big moves due to the space and a proper mechanical lift, so you’re not lifting large appliances like a washing machine into a van. If you’re doing a full house move, it’s genuinely worth it. The tail lift alone saves so much grief.

Quick tip when doing a van rental comparison: don’t just compare by category name. What one company calls a “medium van” is a completely different size to another’s. Look at the actual load dimensions, not the label.

The rate you see is rarely the whole story

This is where a lot of people get a nasty surprise. You find what looks like a great deal, get to the checkout, and the extras start stacking up. Mileage caps, fuel levies, weekend rates, mandatory insurance waivers that weren’t mentioned upfront.

Before you commit to anything, it’s worth asking a few direct questions:

  • Is breakdown cover included? At Sky Van Hire it always is, but not every company bundles it in.
  • What’s the excess on the vehicle if something gets damaged? It can range from a couple of hundred pounds to several thousand depending on who you’re hiring from.
  • Are there daily mileage limits? Find out what happens and how much you are charged if you go over it.

Fuel is another one worth checking. The cleanest arrangement is full-to-full: you pick up the van with a full tank, you return it the same way. Some companies give you a half-empty tank and charge you a premium rate to top it back up themselves. It’s not a dealbreaker but it’s worth knowing beforehand.

And ask about admin fees. Late returns, minor damage processing, cleaning charges. The kind of costs that don’t show up in the headline price but do show up on the invoice. An honest company will tell you all of this upfront without you having to drag it out of them.

Van Rental Comparison: National Chains vs. Local Independent Companies

There’s a version of this where the national chain wins. You need a van in a different city, or you want to book everything online at midnight, or you need a specific type of vehicle they’re more likely to stock. Fair enough.

But for most people hiring locally, especially for a house move or a one-off job, the experience of using a smaller independent company is genuinely different. At Sky Van Hire, our team has worked from the same site since 2009. When you call, you’ll get honest, friendly and local advice from people who have worked in the area. If you’re not sure what size van you need, the team will ask you a few questions and help you find the best solution for your needs.

We have over 200 Google reviews and a 4.9-star rating. After seventeen years in the same spot, serving the same communities around Romford, Ilford, Chigwell and Woodford, that feels like the most honest thing we can say about how we operate.

The bits people forget until the morning of the hire

Your standard UK driving licence, the category B one that almost everyone holds, covers vans up to 3.5 tonnes. That includes everything from a small van right up to a Luton Body with a tail lift. Worth checking if you’ve picked up any penalty points along the way though, as some hire companies have restrictions and it’s better to know before you drive down rather than on the day.

Age catches people out too. Plenty of national providers draw the line at 25 and won’t budge. We take a more straightforward approach at Sky Van Hire, so if you’re a younger driver just ring us and have the conversation rather than assuming it won’t work.

On the day, bring both parts of your driving licence if you’ve got the older paper-and-card format, plus something showing your address. Get that sorted the evening before and the whole collection process takes about five minutes. Leave it until the morning and it always takes longer.

Also don’t forget to generate your DVLA driver check code online the night before. We need this to check for any penalty points, and having it ready means you’ll be driving away in five minutes rather than twenty.

What to actually look for when comparing

It comes down to this: the cheapest quote isn’t always the worst choice, but it’s always worth asking what got cut to make that number work. No breakdown cover? Strict mileage limits? A massive excess? Those things have a cost, it just shows up later rather than upfront.

What you want from a van rental comparison is a clear price, a well-looked-after vehicle, someone you can actually speak to if something goes wrong, and no nasty surprises on the invoice. That sounds like a low bar, but it isn’t always met.

If you’re in Essex or East London, give us a call on 0208 550 8800 or complete our online contact form. We’re open until 5pm on weekdays, Saturday mornings as standard, and Sundays by appointment.
